Kitchen Remedies

Scuff Marks on Floor
Shoe heels can leave unsightly scuff marks on floors. To remove, rub the marks with a clean pencil eraser. Sweep the floor and then clean it as you normally do.

Spiffing Up Silk Flowers
If bouquets look dull, they simply may need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Get rid of dust by turning a hair dryer on cold air and blowing over the flowers. It will make a difference.

Deodorizing the Microwave
To refresh the inside of the microwave, put 1 cup water, 6 whole cloves and one-half lemon into a large microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high for three to five minutes. Let sit for 15 minutes, then wipe the walls.

Unclutter your cupboards by using your empty Mason or mayonnaise jars to store leftovers. When you open your refrigerator you'll see exactly what needs to be eaten and thus prevent the growth of green fuzzies. Better yet, unlike plastic containers, food odors won't linger around the jars. And the final plus, jars are always dishwasher safe and will come out sparkling and sanitized for another use!

Testing Cooking Oil
Wonder if oil is hot enough to begin frying food? Check it by dropping a popcorn kernel into the oil. If it pops, it's ready!

Have Half a Grapefruit Left Over?
Here's an easy storage idea: Use a round plastic lid. Just place the remaining half grapefruit cut-side down on the lid and put into the refrigerator.

Salty Soup?
Oops, if you accidentally add too much salt to soup you are cooking, you can salvage it by dropping in several slices of raw potato. They will absorb some of the salt and when the slices are soft, remove them.

Need Tomato Sauce?
You're in the middle of making a recipe and suddenly you discover that you don't have the called-for tomato sauce. Go back to the kitchen cabinet. Good old canned tomato soup can be substituted. Disaster averted!

Bobbing for a Light
Have a hanging light cord in a dark closet or space that's hard to find? To end all that fumbling around, just tie a florescent fishing bob on the string. You'll be able to find it easily.

Brown Sugar Hard as a Rock
Check the brown sugar in your kitchen cabinet regularly to see if it's hard. To keep it soft, place several apple slices in the container and put the lid on tight. The next day it will be softer.

Vacuum Cleaner Hair-Bound?
If threads or hair become wound around a rotating brush, use a single-edge razor blade or seam ripper to cut the mess. Then, just pull it all out.
