Broken Bones Signs of a closed fracture: Swelling Tenderness to touch Deformity Discoloration Treatment for closed fractures: Keep broken bone ends from moving. Keep adjacent joints from moving. Treat for shock. See section #4 below on splinting. Treatment for open fractures: Do not move protruding bone ends If bleeding, control bleeding by direct pressure on wound. Treat same as closed fracture after bleeding is controlled. Splinting: Place one hand above and one hand below fracture to support it.
